The arrival of driverless autonomous vehicles represents a unique opportunity for a fundamental change in urban mobility and could lead to healthier, more competitive and greener cities - but only if the vehicles are integrated into an effective public transport network. A future with autonomous and connected vehicles can have various outcomes depending on how they are designed, operated and regulated. Will they lead to more cars on the road, more urban sprawl and more congestion? Or will they contribute to shaping sustainable and liveable cities, the regaining of urban space for people, less vehicles on the road and a higher quality of life?

The experience of operating fleets of autonomous vehicles remains limited today, therefore this training programme aims at learning from the current live deployments operated by various mobility services providers worldwide. Attendees will be learning from exchanging with stakeholders of real-life driverless mobility services and the way forward for the introduction of autonomous vehicles in our cities.

In this context the objective of this course is twofold:

  • Demystify autonomous mobility and discuss the possible scenarios of introducing autonomous vehicles in the most sustainable way for our cities. If employed with effective vehicle-sharing schemes, driverless autonomous vehicles could greatly enhance public transport.
  • Get inspired from current operational practice and policy orientations: Learn from stakeholders who build and run autonomous vehicles or contribute to the design of policy and regulatory frameworks.

Day 1: Demystifying autonomous mobility

Objectives of the day:

  • Understanding and defining autonomous vehicles
  • Discussing the implications for public transport and mobility patterns in cities: in particular understanding how the public transport network be redefined with the introduction of autonomous vehicles and what is the potential of cooperation with other mobility stakeholders (responsive transport and shared mobility providers)
  • Learn about the current experience and the state of the market
  • Understand UITP’s position towards autonomous vehicles

Topics to be discussed include:

  • The technology: What makes a vehicle autonomous, what is interconnectivity and intelligent infrastructure? What are the functions of an autonomous vehicle?
  • The types of services and vehicles: individual cars, robotaxis, shared vehicles, etc.
  • The current experience worldwide: Where do autonomous vehicles operate? What parallels can be drawn between test runs in America and experience in Europe?
  • Security: on board, cybersecurity etc.
  • Impacts on traffic fluidity
  • Social equity
  • Ethics and insurance
  • Energy, including effects of data flow
  • Environment and consumption
  • Financial aspects and business models in the public transport sector
  • Public space and urban planning: How will autonomous vehicles integrate with the city? What impacts on urban sprawl, urban segregation, parking etc.
  • Regulatory aspects and homologation
  • The human factor and implications for jobs and labour: Impact on human resources and on customer experience. New job profiles, which one will become redundant and how to manage the transition.

Day 2: Insight into technology, operations & integration with a public transport system

The second day of the course will aim at:

  • Understanding how autonomous vehicles work, their strengths and weaknesses and their role in the ecosystem
  • Discussing the challenge of integrating AVs with public transport and upgrade these vehicle fleets into a real transport system
  • Learning from concrete perspectives and success stories of real operations

The challenge of integrating autonomous shuttles into a larger public transport system

  • How to operate a vehicle in an urban environment without a driver on board?
  • How to coordinate the fleets and integrate them with the operations of existing public transport vehicles (bus, train, trams, etc.)?
  • What software infrastructure is needed to provide safe and efficient operations?
  • How to manage these new assets and their maintenance?
  • How to process and make the best use of vast amount of data generated by autonomous vehicles?
  • How to become a fully digital integrator with all the opportunities of the value of data, CRM & traffic control?
