UITP is organising a conference entitled “The future of mobility in small and medium-sized cities: reconciling public transport and new mobility services” on 17 January (10.00 - 12.30 - welcome coffee & registration at 9.30) in Brussels.

The objective is to invite commercial passenger transport operators, mobility platforms and travel information providers to discuss the future of mobility in small and medium-sized cities around Europe, together with public transport authorities and operators.

Small and medium-sized cities are often overlooked in the debates surrounding the rise of new commercial passenger transport services. The conversation around new mobility services in those cities is different to the one that must be had in large cities. In large cities, the debate focuses on shared space: how do we physically fit all of these new mobility services, often offering individual mobility solutions, in what are already congested roads? The demand for these alternative mobility solutions makes for a more compelling business case in large cities than in smaller urban areas. Their relative absence in small and medium-sized cities across Europe would suggest that new mobility providers and platforms have not yet found a business case for these cities. One solution for cities can be to cooperate with these new commercial services and, through a public service contract, use their services as a ‘last kilometre’ solution for citizens living on the outskirts of the city.

The objectives are to:

  • Ensure that the conversation on the future of mobility is had with public transport and shared mobility at its core and as the backbone of any mobility plan for cities across Europe
  • Bring together all of the stakeholders and push them to engage with the reality of a pre-existing public transport service on the territories they wish to develop their services on
