THE METRO AND RAIL STUDY TOUR POSTPONED

With safety the number one priority, UITP Academy made the decision to postpone the Metro and Rail Study Tour planned in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain on 16-18 March 2020.

As global concerns over the coronavirus outbreak continue to grow, the wellbeing of all participants in UITP events is the first focus of the association. Decisions based on those attending and instructing the course were taken into consideration.

New dates for this Metro and Rail Study Tour will be announced in the coming weeks. For any question, please contact us at training@uitp.org

UITP’s Metro and Rail Study Tour gives the opportunity to join a unique learning event composed of technical visits to 4 major rail networks in Spain with a diversity of technologies and operation strategies to discover:

  • ‘Metro Madrid’ operating the metro of Madrid
  • ‘Renfe’ operating the suburban network in Madrid called ‘Cercanias’
  • ‘FGC’ in Barcelona operating the suburban railway network in Barcelona
  • ‘TMB’ operating the metro of Barcelona, including a fully automated line

The objective of the study tour is to showcase a diversity of rail networks and technologies. Each day will be composed of presentations by public transport operators on the network and the operations followed by a visit to the rail depots and maintenance centres, in some cases also to the control centres and stations.

Why Madrid and Barcelona?

  • Both cities run two of the most extensive heavy rail systems in Europe: metro networks and suburban services.
  • The cities and companies have invested in major depot and maintenance facilities, stations and control centres
  • The diversity of technologies and infrastructure to discover
  • The connectivity between both cities by high-speed train and of both cities to the rest of the world

What will I visit and learn during the study tour?

  • Presentations by the local transport authority on the rail strategy and developments in Madrid
  • Presentations by the 4 local rail operators on:
    • their current rail system and future developments
    • operations management
    • vehicles, technology and infrastructure in their system
    • maintenance and asset management
    • innovation
  • Visit of at least three major depots and maintenance facilities with explanations by professionals of each company
  • Additional visit will be added, which can include control centres and station visit.

What will be the final programme? Can there be changes in the programme?

The programme will take place as outlined on this website. However changes can occur and some additional visit still need to be confirmed (these will be published on the website ASAP). In any case, it would not affect the travel plans of participants.

Who and how many people to expect?

The group is limited to 25 participants to ensure a good learning experience. UITP is a global association and participants come from public transport companies worldwide.

Programme:

This is a provisional programme, more details will be confirmed soon.

  • Depots and maintenance facilities are not located in the city centres. Therefore travel will take some time and some walking may be needed. UITP would of course provide a transfer if the distance is too long to walk.
    • Persons with reduced mobility should inform us before so that we can provide assistance.
  • Local transport, transfers and/or tickets for public transport will be provided by UITP. However participants are responsible for buying their train tickets between Madrid and Barcelona.
