UITP Academy is launching an online course on Public Transport Fundamentals, starting on 12 May 2020 and ending on 28 May 2020. The course features 7 interactive online sessions.

Here's what you will learn

  • Provide participants with fundamental knowledge on public transport and sustainable urban mobility
  • Increase awareness on the indispensability of public transport and sustainable mobility solutions in cities
  • Allow exchange of knowledge by tapping on UITP's international expertise
  • Present and discuss basic definitions related to the organisation and management of public transport and illustrate them with examples
  • Provide a conducive platform for networking opportunities and interaction amongst participants

  • What is sustainable mobility and why public transport?
  • How to measure sustainable mobility in cities? How to measure public transport usage?
  • Challenges and opportunities at global and local levels
  • Contribution to economic, environmental and social policies
  • Mega-trends and impact on urban mobility and public transport

Thursday 14 May - Session 2: Public transport and the city: the main pillars of sustainable mobility in cities

  • Integration of public transport and land use planning
  • Demand management tools: control and pricing of car usage; parking and traffic management; making sustainable mobility attractive
  • Development of the public transport offer: commercial speed, service quality, regulatory, comfort etc.

Week 2

Monday 18 May - Session 3 : Public transport modes and the modal choice issue - Focus on Bus

  • Introduction to modes rail, metro, light rail and bus
  • Bus systems, BRT and new energies
  • Other modes

Wednesday 20 May - Session 4: Public transport modes and the modal choice issue - Focus on Rail

  • Tramways and Light rail systems
  • Metro, automated metros, suburban railways
  • Comparison of modes and modal choice

Week 3

Monday 25 May - Session 5: Combined mobility: integrating new mobility services

  • Development of alternative mobility services: taxi, car sharing, bike sharing, carpooling, TNC/ride sharing, micro-mobility etc.
  • From the last mile to competition: do all these services contribute to sustainable mobility in cities?
  • Integration and Mobility as a Service (MaaS)

Wednesday 27 May - Session 6: Public transport regulation and organization

  • Organisational principles and forms
  • Advantages and limits of different forms of organisation
  • Decision levels
  • Regulatory frameworks and right of initiative
  • Competition for the market

Thursday 28 May - Session 7: Funding in public transport

  • Funding: a business case for public transport
  • Revenue strategy and fare policy
  • Earmarked taxes and levies
  • Land value capture

How does it work?

  • 7 interactive online sessions with a presentation of 60 minutes followed by 15-30 minutes discussion (90 minutes maximum in total)
  • Online exercices with preparatory work at home
  • Group size: up to 25 participants 
  • Tool used: gotomeeting
  • Accessible from any location and devices worldwide
  • Material (presentation & workshop documents) is made available to participants

When?

All sessions take place at 10am CEST (local time in Madrid, Rome, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Stockholm, Warsaw)
