About:

With most metropolitan areas targeting zero-emission environments, an increasing number of cities and transport companies are considering a fully-electric solution for their urban bus network. In this context, the UITP Centre for Training designed this training programme on Electric Buses in Izmir, Turkey where 20 fully electric bus fleet is in operation. The course will offer a comprehensive overview of the electric solution for urban bus networks, from the setting of a city strategy, the choice of technology and the battery, the procurement of buses, all the way to the implementation and operation of the system. In addition to our interactive plenary sessions, workshops will allow participants to apply their learnings in small groups and a site visit and demonstration of electric buses in Izmir will be organised.

"Excellent Programme with great opportunity for networking. Topics chosen were relevant and helped me to develop a deeper understanding of the potential for electric buses. Would definitely recommend you attend this course if you have an interest in implementing electric buses."
(Yam Donn, Manager Bus Assets, Land Transport Authority, Singapore - Edition Barcelona 2017)

"An excellent course for those that are considering electrification of bus public transport to improve quality of life of the passengers as well as the residents that live along the routes."
(Danny Ilioiu, Director R&D MTA New York CIty Transit, Regional Bus Operations - Edition Geneva 2016)

"A unique opportunity to meet with operators, OEM's and e-mobility solution providers with the aim of reviewing and understanding the challenges and opportunities of operating electric buses. Be prepared to actively participate in engaging discussions and rethink your views on the future of the electric bus!"
(Alexandre McCraw Project Manager e-Mobility, Solutions ABB - Edition Barcelona 2017)

Programme:

DAY 1

09.00 Welcome and introduction to the course

09.30 Session 1A: Introduction: An electric solution for urban bus networks

What is an electric bus and how can electric buses contribute to making public transport network competitive and our cities sustainable? What are the drivers and barriers when it comes to the choice of technology? How can it affect the institutional organisation and governance in a city?

10.00 Session 1B: Configurations and innovations in the urban bus sector

Bus architecture (modularity), sustainability, the fuel/energy choice, Bus systems like Bus Rapid Transit. Electric buses and latest developments

10.30 Coffee break

11.00 Session 2A: Configurations and innovations in the urban bus sector (Continued)

Battery technologies – cell type and management systems. What is the lifetime and standards for different technologies?  What are the safety related issues on batteries?

11.30 Session 2B: E-Buses, the market, hybrid, charging infrastructure and cases

This session will give an overview of the market. Looking to auxiliaries and related technologies used to run electric busses, whether it be the installation (and running) of charging infrastructure, (the impact on information technology systems), driver assistance and standardisation. Some actual examples of implementation.

12.30 Lunch

13.30 Session 3: Fuel cell and battery technologies for electric bus

Explanation of the fuel cell principle and practice.  Batteries technologies – cell type and life time.  Battery behaviour and management systems.  Safety aspects.

15.00 Coffee break

15.30 Session 4: Workshop

17.00 End of the day

DAY 2

09.00 Session 5: The impact on operations

From line management and maintenance to training of personnel, driving and safety, the operations of a fully electric bus line differs substantially from that of a traditional bus line. The importance of studying the initial operational needs are key to successfully introducing electric buses, as much as the design and dimensioning of the line according to the energy supply and usage. International best practice will present return on experience from the operation of electric fleets across Europe and the world.

10.30 Coffee break

11.00 Session 6: LCC and procurement

To understand the Life Cycle Cost of the investment is vital for decision making. There are also procurement principles. A Tender procedure, advised by UITP, will be presented in order to get an organised procurement process.

12.30 Lunch

13.30 Session 7A: The power of data in electric bus operations

14.15 Session 7B : New technologies and electric solution

15.30 Coffee break

16.00 Session 9: Getting the procurement process right: a case study

To successfully implement and run fully electric line, it is essential to make the tendering process evolve from a simple vehicle purchase to the tendering of a comprehensive electric system, taking into account life cycle costs, charging infrastructure, batteries, economic models, leasing and renting, etc.

17.30 End of the day
