The 3iBS project participated at the 2014 Annual Polis Conference which took place in Madrid from the 27 – 28 November 2014. The conference was also a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Polis. Regarded as one of the leading sustainable mobility events for European cities, the event brought together a wide range of stakeholder groups to discuss and exchange on a number of different thematic topics in urban transport.
The 3iBS project was presented in a dedicated session on ‘innovative and clean bus systems’. Michele Tozzi – 3iBS Project Manager – briefly showed the logical approach of the Project and gave a snapshot of the bus fleets in operation in Europe as well as the main tendencies for the future in terms of propulsion systems, which emerge from the results of the 3iBS survey on EU bus systems.
The main part of the presentation was delivered by Mario Canet Sabate from Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona, who presented the main results analysed in the project in the domain of Energy Efficiency of the urban bus fleets. Within this topic, selected solutions implemented in Italy, France, the Netherlands and Spain have been analysed and, although under different testing conditions, clearly showed the potential of eco-driving systems, advanced gearboxes and hybrid propulsion systems in improving the energy efficiency of urban bus systems. The characterization of some of the above technologies on a real city network has been achieved in the Barcelona study cases, where the combined effects of improvements in the bus fleet (-28% energy consumption) and changes in the network design (-7% energy consumption) have been assessed.
