UITP and STIB organised a technical visit of Brussels' public transport network as part of the EU Green Week 2019. This event was a great success with more than 20 participants, including 12 students and five EU institutions representatives. The objective was to highlight the fundamental role that public transport has to play in meeting today’s environmental, climate and overall urban quality of life goals, while giving a glimpse of the intricate challenges which decision makers and future practitioners will have to face.

After a first round of presentations at UITP on the public transport sector and STIB’s electric mobility strategy, STIB took the group on a visit of the opportunity charging system for electric buses at Porte de Namur, composed of a substation powered by the metro, as well as two fast chargers of 420kW each. In just a few minutes, these chargers are able to power two buses simultaneously, with the load required to reach the second terminal.

Participants also got a chance to ask an electric bus driver about the changes the deployment of this new technology brought to his function.
