As more and more people debate the opportunities new mobility offers public transport, it is up to a truly international association such as UITP to lead this debate.
It’s never been more important to share ideas than right now.
In order to understand the collective viewpoints of the sector, UITP has led and participated in two very interesting events in the United States.
Up first, UITP hosted the New Mobility Learning Visit in San Francisco, with our latest Taxi Platform Committee meeting co-hosted by Uber.
During this three-day event our taxi delegation – including leading figures from Shenzhen Bus Group, MyTaxi, PTV Group, LTA Singapore, Moscow Government, Cars Taxi Group and more - held their meeting in the Uber HQ where presentations were made and discussions held on the next steps for the sector.
Our learning tour included visits to JUMP Bikes, SFMTA, The University of California, Berkeley, Chariot, Zoox, Aurora and a meeting at the Centre of the 4th Industrial Revolution of the World Economic Forum.
“As an international association, it’s always productive for our team to spend time in the presence of our members, in the different parts of the world UITP reaches. The learning visit to San Francisco was very interesting and reflected the trend of enlarging the scope of public transport beyond mass transit by integrating shared mobility solutions and on-demand transport. As the place where many innovations in this field have come to life, Silicon Valley was the perfect venue for UITP to bring together these leading industry figures”, said Mohamed Mezghani, UITP Secretary General.

The delegation were delighted to hear about urban mobility from new players in the sector and also listen to presentations from the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at Berkeley – one of the world’s leading centres for transportation research and education.

After wrapping up our learning visit in San Francisco, UITP headed to Los Angeles for LaCoMotion, “the global laboratory for future mobility”.
LaCoMotion is organised by the New Cities Foundation, who UITP were pleased to announce a two-year partnership with last month.
Our Secretary General Mohamed Mezghani participated in the opening session panel alongside the Mayor of Montreal, the Economics and Infrastructure Minister of Estonia and the CEO of Avis providing one of the ‘sessions highlights’ on the problems we face with traffic: “A clean traffic jam is still a traffic jam.”
“The time spent at LaCoMotion was very productive with many interesting meetings and a rich programme on offer from the New Cities team. The new developments that urban mobility is experiencing offer many opportunities for public transport, and the importance of sharing ideas to advance mobility in our cities has never been more relevant”, said Mohamed.
During our participation in LaCoMotion, Mohamed and the team connected with leading bodies such as the Los Angeles Department of Transport, Toyota Mobility Foundation, Transdev North America and the Transport Commissioner of Boston.
These events show the important developments being made across the world in urban mobility and the need to make the case for public transport at every possible opportunity.
