This week all eyes will be on New York as world leaders from the fields of government, finance, business and civil society convene in the city for the UN Climate Summit, with UITP representing the interests of the public transport community.

As a prelude to the Summit, UITP will be taking an active role in today’s (22 September) ‘On track for clean and green transport’ side-event that will gather high-level stakeholders to discuss the role of sustainable transport as a solution to climate change.

UITP has also joined forces with the International Union of Railways (UIC) and Urban Electric Mobility Vehicles Initiative (UEMI) following an invitation from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to deliver ambitious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from land transport.

Governments, transport companies and associations, the private sector and civil society organisations are planning bold action to reduce transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by expanding the use of public transport, greater use of more efficient rail transport and the accelerate introduction of urban electric transport.

UITP will be showcasing over 350 climate pledges from more than 110 public transport organisations that include projects that will reduce business operational emissions or new transport projects that will bring about a modal shift. UITP will also be presenting its aim of doubling the market share of public transport worldwide by 2025.
