The MENA region stands at a pivotal moment in its journey toward decarbonised, inclusive, and technologically advanced urban transport systems.

As cities strive to meet climate goals and reduce their carbon footprint, electric buses have emerged as a cornerstone of future-ready mobility strategies across the region.

We are inviting you to join us for an engaging day of an exclusive launch of UITP MENA’s latest flagship research project exploring one of the most transformative shifts in our regional public transport: the rise of electric buses across the MENA landscape.

The study unveils the latest insights from the MENA region on electric buses and provides a platform for strategic dialogue on accelerating the region’s transition to zero-emission public buses.

In addition to the insights from our latest report, the event features high-level discussions, expert panels, and technical sessions that highlight numerous topics related to public buses and technological innovations.

Why Should You Attend?

Gain first-hand insights into MENA’s evolving electric bus status, including:

  • Electric bus landscape in MENA cities: Understand regional decarbonisation targets and the current status of electric bus adoption across MENA cities.
  • Drivers and challenges of electric bus adoption: Explore the key enablers and barriers influencing electric bus deployment in MENA, and benchmark against global pioneers to identify lessons and gaps.
  • A deep dive into cost-benefit analysis: Understand the full value proposition of electric buses through a comprehensive assessment including socioeconomic impacts.
  • Participate in panel discussion: Hear from public transport authorities and policymakers as they explore the policy, regulatory, and financing frameworks needed to scale electric bus deployment in the region.
  • Engage in technical sessions:Dive into the recent bus projects, procurement strategies, smart technologies, and many others.
  • Network and exchange knowledge: Connect with key stakeholders across the public transport ecosystem and contribute to open discussions shaping the regional e-bus transition.

Whether you are a decision-maker, transport authority, transport operator, industry leader, or a researcher, this event will offer a unique opportunity to engage in evidence-based discussions.

Programme

Session 3
Effective demand and passenger flow management are essential for optimizing rail network efficiency, reducing congestion, and enhancing the overall passenger experience. This involves forecasting demand patterns, balancing capacity with ridership fluctuations, and ensuring smooth passenger movement within stations and onboard trains. A well-managed demand and passenger flow strategy leads to increased reliability, reduced operational costs, and a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers. In this session, key strategies include real-time monitoring through digital technologies, AI-driven demand prediction models, and dynamic scheduling to adjust train frequency based on peak and off-peak demand will be discussed.

Session 2
An effective rail network requires both seamless multi-modal integration and thoughtful socio-cultural adaptation to meet the diverse needs of urban mobility. Integrating rail with buses, trams, cycling infrastructure, and pedestrian pathways enhances accessibility, reduces travel times, and improves the overall passenger experience through coordinated schedules, unified ticketing, and well-planned intermodal hubs. At the same time, rail systems must be designed with an understanding of local mobility patterns, cultural preferences, and social behaviors. In this session, how to better integrate with other modes of public transport to enhance seamless passenger experience and cultural adaption will be discussed.

Session 4
Metro operations are primarily financed through passenger revenue, which often falls short of covering operational expenses (OPEX). To ensure financial sustainability, it is essential to explore innovative strategies for generating additional revenue. Secondary income sources such as station naming rights, retail space development, and advertising can play a crucial role in bridging the funding gap and supporting long-term metro operations. In this session, alternative financing strategies will be discussed.

Session 1
Public transport networks are highly vulnerable to various incidents that can disrupt operations, temporarily suspend services, or impact system components, requiring increased attention. In the MENA region, extreme weather events such as heatwaves, sandstorms, and, more recently, heavy rainfall and flooding pose significant challenges for rail systems. These factors must be considered both in system design and daily operations. In this session, we will explore strategies to ensure the continuous operation of rail systems by leveraging digitalization, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) to monitor and optimize system functionality.
