His Excellency Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be the opening keynote speaker at the UITP MENA Transport Congress & Exhibition taking place in Dubai, from 25-27 April 2016. This must-attend event for public transport professionals will focus on urban mobility in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region.

H.E. Dr. Al Zeyoudi is the UAE Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and was the Director of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In February 2016, responding to the necessity for mega cities to tackle climate change, Dubai authorities renamed the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water as the ‘UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment’ and Dr. Al Zeyoudi was appointed as Minister. His main goal is to develop and monitor programmes and legislation in order to preserve a clean environment for the next generation of Emiratis, Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi is playing a key role in the UAE’s change.

His involvement in committees such as Emirates Green Development Council or the Zayed Future Energy Prize will be valuable to delegates at the MENA Transport Congress & Exhibition where Dr. Al Zeyoudi will be talking about the role of public transport in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He will bring his knowledge and expertise on several burning issues:

  • Providing a low emission alternatives to private cars
  • Promoting compact land use in order to reduce the need to travel long distances
  • Minimising the carbon footprint of public transport operations: energy conservation and new technologies.

Many countries in the MENA region have started to invest in public transport systems by opening metro lines, railways and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, but this trend is relatively new and the population keeps growing. However, the main barrier to public transport still remains the expense whilst the old solution of building more roads appears to be unsustainable and inefficient in the long-term.

Thanks to his rich educational background from three different continents and in the UAE, His Excellency Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi has a real vision of the future and understands the challenges for the MENA region to improve its public transport systems based on more sustainable solutions.
