About

Make the most of the UITP Global Public Transport Summit by joining UITP’s Rail Study Tour on 2-4 June 2023.

UITP’s Rail Study Tour gives the opportunity to join a unique learning event composed of technical visits to 3 major rail networks in Spain with a diversity of technologies and operation strategies to discover:

  • ‘Metro Madrid’ operating the metro of Madrid.
  • ‘Tranvia de Zaragoza’ operating an integrated tram system.
  • ‘Renfe’ operating the suburban network in Barcelona.
  • ‘FGC’ in Barcelona operating the suburban railway network in Barcelona.
  • ‘TMB’ operating the metro of Barcelona, including a fully automated line.

The objective of the study tour is to showcase a diversity of rail networks and technologies. Each day will be composed of presentations by public transport operators on the network and the operations followed by a visit to the rail depots and maintenance centres, in some cases also to the control centres and stations.

You can also join the UITP’s Bus Study Tour on 8-10 June 2023 in Barcelona-Valencia-Madrid after the UITP Global Public Transport Summit.

Why Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona?

  • The cities and companies have invested in major depot and maintenance facilities, stations and control centres.
  • The diversity of technologies and infrastructure to discover.
  • The connectivity between each of the three cities by high-speed train.

  • Presentations by the local transport operator on the rail strategy and developments in Madrid.
  • Presentations by the 4 local rail operators on:
    • Their current rail system and future developments
    • Operations management
    • Vehicles, technology and infrastructure in their system
    • Maintenance, asset management and Innovation
  • Visit of at least three major depots and maintenance facilities with explanations by professionals of each company.
  • Optional visits will be available in Barcelona, which include automated metro system, control and maintenance centres and driving simulators.

What will be the final programme? Can there be changes in the programme?

The programme will take place as outlined on this website, however changes can occur. In any case, it would not affect the travel plans of participants.
