Capacity building training

Route prioritisation and financial assistance help cities in achieving long-term goals and prepare an optimisation plan for deployment of electric buses. The capacity building training programme is best suited for State Transport Undertakings (STUs) and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) for successful deployment of electric buses in India.

India is rapidly moving towards the path of decarbonisation of public transport. At COP 26, India set the ambitious goal of decarbonising energy to 50% and achieving 500 GW of fossil fuel-free generating capacity by 2030. India has also pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2070 to fight against climate change. Along these lines, the Indian government is proactively advocating for the sustainable mobility, and focusing on adoption of zero emission vehicles, or electric vehicles.

In the past decade, there has been a rise in the government led initiatives for faster adoption of electric buses in the country such as introduction of Nation Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 (NEMMP), the FAME India scheme, the Grand Challenge scheme, National Electric bus program and the recently launched PM e-Bus Sewa.

Several cities and state transport undertakings across India have leveraged these schemes and taken to replacing their diesel fleet by electric buses, and are at various stages of tendering, procurement, and implementation.

However, transitioning from diesel or CNG buses to electric buses requires a system-wide transformation in planning, procurement, financing, contracting, operations, and maintenance of vehicles. To help the cities and states undertake the mammoth task, UITP India has been continuously supporting various cities through research-based projects, specifically designed for better adoption of electric buses in India.

Free training, limited seats

UITP India’s latest project ‘Advancing Electric Buses in India’ is focussed on providing technical assistance to three cities in India. This assistance will streamline the city’s deployment of electric buses to the best possible routes. Route prioritisation and financial assistance will help cities in achieving long-term goals and prepare an optimisation plan.

Under the project, UITP India will also conduct capacity building training programmes for State Transport Undertakings (STUs) and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) across India. The first capacity building training programme on the ‘Management of Electric Buses’ was conducted on 28-29 November 2023 in New Delhi. The presentations and key discussion from the training programme can be accessed using the link below:

In continuation, the second capacity building training programme under Advancing Electric Buses Project will be hosted on 27-28 June in Pune, India. The training will involve active engagement with government bus authorities, operators, global transport professionals, and other key stakeholders to enable accelerated deployment of e-buses in India.
