About

Public transport is the backbone of cities and impacts the daily lives of all its users. For many social groups, it is their sole access to education, employment, leisure or healthcare and active participation in society depends on the safe usage of public transport. Therefore, passengers show very diverse demographic and social backgrounds: In most cities more than half of passengers are women. Low-income groups often solely rely on public transport. People with reduced mobility need a highly accessible transport system. There is an increasing variety of ethnical backgrounds among passengers, particularly in large urban centres. For public transport companies this means that it is not only about finding the right skills, but also reflecting the diversity of social groups and demographics in their customer segments.

Furthermore, gender balance and the employment of women in public transport play an essential role in diversity management: this is where inclusive policies can make the greatest difference, given the high share of women among customers against a relatively low share of women being employed by the industry.
